Internet Connection on a laptop with Samsung Corby Pro


Wired connection through data cable and Bluetooth wireless connection

Samsung Corby Pro works as a modem if you want to connect it to your computer and browse the Internet, either with data cable or wirelessly using Bluetooth. I am assuming BSNL 3G connection in this article. Steps should be similar for other service providers too.

Connectivity with data cable

Install dotnetfx35.exe from CD 2/2 found in your Samsung Corby Pro orininal box. Alternatively, you can download it from Microsoft website. A google search will take you there. Install Samsung Kies software from CD 1/2 and select custom install with all options. Alternatively, download it from Samsung website.

Start Samsung Kies and allow it to autoupdate if you are already connected to the Internet. Now plug your Samsung Corby Pro to your PC or laptop through the data cable that came in the box. After a few seconds, you will be able to see your device on the top right corner of the Kies screen. If it doesn't, something is wrong. Try rebooting your PC/laptop and mobile and then connect. If it still doesn't, let me know what error you are getting.

In the list of widgets at the bottom of Kies screen, select "Tethering". It will popup a window that will allow you to create a connection and connect to the net. Click the "gear" icon to setup the connection. Select "other" for country and service provider. In the phone number field enter *99***1# and enter bsnlnet in APN (Access Point Name). Save the settings and click the "Connect" button ( the icon with two cell phones). After a few seconds, you should see the "Connected" message. Now you are ready to surf the net!

We were getting bandwidths between 2 Mbps – 4.5 Mbps always. Being a mobile broadband technology you can’t expect a steady bandwidth always.

Dial up networking with Samsung Corby Pro Bluetooth

If you don't have the data cable handy, you can connect wirelessly with Bluetooth. Most modern laptops have bluetooth built-in. You need to enable Bluetooth in your laptop, either by a button or through Bluetooth software. If you don't have Bluetooth in your laptop or you are using a PC, you need to buy a Bluetooth dongle available in the market. Good ones cost you Rs 300 in India. I am using one such device with IVT Bluesoleil softare that came with it. Your software might look slightly different, but the functionality should be the same.

After enabling Bluetooth in PC or laptop, enable Bluetooth in your Samsung Corby Pro. Clicking "Search" should list your PC or laptop if you had properly enabled it. Similarly, clicking "Search for devices" in your PC/laptop software should list your Samsung Corby Pro "GT-B5310" or whatever name you had given to your device as shown below:

Right click your samsung device on the list and select "Pair". You will be presented with a input dialog. Key in a simple number like 123 and select OK. You will be presented with a similar dialog in your mobile phone. Key in the same number say 123 and select OK. Now your devices are paired!

Right click again and click properties to enable Dial up networking services by checking the appropriate check box as shown below. Save the settings with OK button click.

Again Right Click your samsung device from the list and select the menu item that reads something like "Create Dialup networking". In the dialog box that pops up, enter your full mobile number (919XXXXXXXXX) in the user name and password fields, *99***1# for Phone number and enter bsnlnet in APN (Access Point Name). Save the connection if prompted.

Right click again to "Connect Bluetooth Dialup Networking". After a few seconds you should see a "Connected" message and be able to browse the Internet.
